WE DID IT Race Across America - 2008-07-10
WE DID IT - 3,213 miles in 6 days 13 hours and 58 minutes - All on road bikes supplied by Giant!!!
United8 Blog entry: A note from one of Alex's fellow riders
It is Sunday morning. I guess most of us are back now. I have been back for almost 48 hours. Time has flown by since I met Steve at Leatherhead prior to setting out for Heathrow and then LAX. It really does feel like it was months ago. But it was the 8th June!
Since then we have come together as a group and achieved something remarkable. For me there were always two big priorities. The first was to do our very best for Clic Sargent. And the second was to be competitive and do ourselves justice on the road. On the Clic Sargent front we have truly excelled. Despite a slow start we have worked away - all of us - to get to a total this morning as I write of nigh on £80,000. I think that's brilliant. I know there is more to come. It makes me proud to be associated with the event.
Were we competitive? You bet your sweet Yankee ass we were! 6 days, 13 hours and 58 seconds is an awesome result. We incurred no time penalties. We averaged over 19 miles per hour. We crossed from west coast to east in 6 days! I still can't quite believe it.
So on the face of it the RAAM for me was a great success. But since my return there has been something else sitting at the heart of my sense of accomplishment and feel good. And that is the team. The seventeen of us and what that means to me. The funds raised and the speed are outcomes of the really special thing about the RAAM and about United Eight - the people. Yesterday I attended the children's school speech day. Lots of friends and acquaintances were keen to know how RAAM had gone. Being asked the question sometimes puts you on the spot and in grappling for an answer that captures my true feeling I gravitated time and again to the team and what we achieved together. I feel an enormous warmth and affection for every one of you. Each one of us made a significant commitment to do this. We all gave our time, we all endured discomfort but we bonded together to form a fearsome and yet caring unit. To be part of that unit was a true privilege. So thank you all for making the event as special as it was. As the dust settles and and normal life resumes I can look back on one of the best experiences of my life.
Love to you all
